February - dull, grey, lack of vitamin D, dreaming of summer sunshine.....

It's been a wet winter and pretty grey, work is busy. We are currently booking new designs into May 2016. What have we been upto? I attended the Society of Garden Designers awards ceremony at the Landmark London Hotel on the Marylebone Road for an evening of catch up with lots of old and new friends and colleagues. A big Thank You to the Land Design Partnership who invited me along for the evening. The equivalent to the BAFTAS for garden design surrounded by tv celeb garden designers, Chelsea Main Avenue Designers and many SGD members. A lovely evening, catching up with suppliers, other designers and landscaping companies. Here I am with Christina from Land Design Partnership and Rae from Rae Wilkinson Design. The food was delicious the wine was flowing, but the room was incredibly warm, we chatted all night, celebrating the success of great designs. Unfortunately I didn't stay up in London as I needed to work on the new website at the weekend, getting the last train hom...

3d design work by greencube

greencube are constantly designing difficult gardens on multi levels and always use sketchup pro to create our three dimensional interpretations of our plans. This has become an invaluable tool to accurately represent our ideas and our designs. We create a number of views, take you for a tour around your newly designed garden. Landscapers also love our 3d's, it helps with their interpretation. We also share our sketchup files with architects and vice versa if we are working on a shared project. Here are a few examples of gardens we have designed recently using sketchup pro A new build bungalow with small garden, part enclosed by a brick wall for a retired couple A couple we designed a garden for back in 2008, who have bought extra land and extending their garden further, in Surrey A multi level garden in Seal, Nr Sevenoaks A large family garden in Sevenoaks  A small courtyard garden for a family in Brentwood We use sketchup to draf...

Oak seat and slate paving

Here's a finished outdoor seat made in seasoned oak with steel supports and underplanted with Thyme, Erigeron and Hakonechloa. The upright green oak sleepers behind serves as a raised planter as well as a back rest. It offers a really lovely bench that's softened by the planting, designed for my Mum, I visited last week to deliver their bulbs, they are looking after it very well. garden design - greencube planting - greencube hardscapes construction - quest landscapes The shed has been painted the same colour as the arches, the fence has been painted with black ash which in time as the plants establish will fade into the background making the plants look brighter.

Sculptural Log Store or Bug Hotel ?

I've had another busy week, designing a garden for a family in Tunbridge Wells as well as some interesting visits to new clients and existing clients. I have ordered our first autumn planting palettes for September - 1st  job in Mersham, Ashford the other in Hartfield in the Ashdown Forest  and met a client at a nursery to choose a few key specimen plants for a garden in Sevenoaks, so a busy busy week. greencube's Sculptural Log Store Who would want a a standard log store when they can have one of these? A log store for my wood burner that keeps me warm in winter in my working studio doubles as a sculpture in my meadow garden.  I found an image on pinterest, tweeked it a bit and had it made by a local metal fabricator. Clayton and Neil of Quest Landscapes kindly delivered it to me yesterday and concreted the holding post, here's the finished item, a big thank you to Darrin Williams who made it up with mild steel, its already rusting as hoped after the l...

Meadows, summer cutting and planting combinations for the hardy gardener

greencubes garden: Our meadow is in its second year and we have enjoyed it tremendously, although it looks a bit ragged currently having had the summer chop by Mike with the petrol hedge trimmer and a tidy up by Gemma. We planted thousands of bulbs in the autumn and reaped the reward with some great additional colour and seasonal interest throughout early spring to mid summer. Here are a few images captured in the last few months: Here the allium mount everest are looking majestic above the froth of the ox-eye daisy. allium seed heads glowing in the evening sun and of course nature doing it's thing, adding self seeded foxgloves in strategic places! and now its had its summer high cut to hopefully secure some additional flowering in late summer and early autumn before I add another thousand bulbs to add even more colour for next year. Meanwhile in my kitchen garden I've been harvesting potatoes, rhubarb, courgettes, radish...
