Vertical Planting on a Budget

Vertical planting has been incredibly popular during the last 10 years, inspired and driven by Patrick Blanc's amazing installations, seen in London, Paris and across the world. I dabbled with it back in 2006 for a rhs chelsea show garden, creating my vertical living art installations, but we have since played with the ideas. Here's an idea we carried out back in a tiny courtyard garden back in 2007, using offcuts of paving, to create the crevices in which I planted a mixture of Sempervivums, requiring a teaspoon of water, these plants can thrive in this sunny location and are incredibly low maintenance. Here mixed with Rudbeckia deamii, Achillea, Verbena, Anemanthele (although be careful with this grass, it can self seed anywhere, but easy to pull up unwanted seedlings) and topiary. This vertical idea creates a great, original, textural focal point that breaks up the white rendered walls that enclose this tiny courtyard.               ...

NEWS - christmas comes early... Sparrow Hotel completed before deadline of Christmas Day!

So here it is my treasured sparrow flats, this has got to be the most original and unique christmas present I have ever received, now proudly positioned on the north/westerly wall of our house. My triangular designed sparrow flats ( great tit's also welcome) , with 10 nesting boxes integrated within, you could call it the sparrow hotel. I'm waiting with anticipation for the birds to move right on in. All colour co-ordinated to tie in with our windows and doors. HOW SPECTACULAR. A big thank you to DAD Buckland (my father-in-law) who lovingly built this for me with great attention to detail and execution of my original brief. ha ha. It was delivered along with a tawny owl nesting box which has been positioned in our oak tree, we often hear the Tawny owl calling and we are hoping it likes its new home! So along with the nectar rich meadow that we carefully sowed last spring and was full of bees and butterflies this summer and my bug hotel wall, Our meadow this summe...

What's looking good in our garden we maintain in Tunbridge Wells?

This garden in Langton Green is maintained weekly by Harriet at greencube. This garden was designed  and planted by greencube in 2011. Harriet has been out taking some lovely photos recently with her new camera..... Here the Hydrangea prezioza, just taking on its autumn colour, basking in the low morning sunshine. The Chaenomeles have been trained and tied to the retaining wall in espalier style. underplanted with Hemerocallis. The berries on the Pyracantha have been abundant this year. Land art and reflective pool in our Hadlow Garden

We were planting in Hadlow last week, adding a little greencube magic...... This is our second garden for our clients who lived in Sevenoaks and now own this very large new build house in Hadlow. A small bungalow which was eventually knocked down replaced with a contemporary family home with white render, grey windows and cedar cladding. We have enjoyed working on this scheme with pared back planting palette in silvers, purples and many ornamental grasses. This will really look stunning in the spring and summer of next year. We have matched the materials with white render, cedar decking and dark grey granite to match the windows. We have also had fun designing a piece of land art, sculpted beautifully by contractors KS Groundworks.  Bringing a fun element and change in level to what is a very flat open space. hiding the parked cars and shed as well as the boundary and neighbour's properties. This is it's new winter look, in summer it will be covered in meado...

greencube presents our new green slate wall

We've had some physically tough weeks: planting up a new garden for a new house in Seddlescombe, Battle with 2139 trees, shrubs, herbaceous and ornamental grasses along with 2238 bulbs. A big thank you to the team: Harriet, Clayton, Callum and Susan, great effort and delivery and very happy clients! We'll go back next spring and summer, for some photos. We've also been working alongside Oakleigh Manor on a large scheme in Sevenoaks that greencube designed last year. We are currently working hard to get the last few planting elements completed whilst Oakleigh lay the resin bound drive. WE have  included some wonderful espalier fruit trees in the design. This is such a large scheme I have broken the planting up into 4 phases. Sevenoaks Design: Meanwhile, Quest Landscapes have been working on another of our projects in Sevenoaks.  I've been keen to use this product since my introduction to it late last year. This one is green slate and supplied by London Sto...

We're out bulb planting!

We were out planting 1200 bulbs yesterday in two gardens, I took the camera along to one of the gardens in Borough Green, designed last year, planted this spring. It has really knitted together and still looking colourful for October. It may be October but the large tree border still looks amazing with our favourite Hydrangea 'Annabelle ' mixed with Agastache and Geranium. The sculptural granite balls are softened by the Libertia grandiflora Whenever we work in this garden we are constantly entertained by BILLY and ALFIE the resident small cats with big characters ! Still looking great are Persicaria and our favourite Pestemon Both erigeron's are doing well in the raised planter Autumnal but still holding onto summer flower.
